Maker or taker in the OKX app: settings on the order form that change your fee

Guides · 2026-10-15

On a small phone screen, the OKX order form looks simple: price, amount, buy or sell. A few smaller options sit just below, and they have a direct effect on the fee you pay. Whether your order adds liquidity to the book, making you a maker, or takes it, making you a taker, depends on the order type and these settings. Spending five minutes to understand them is worth it if you trade from the app regularly.

Start from your own rates

In the app, open your profile and find the fee rates page. Signed in, it shows your tier and your maker and taker rates for spot and for derivatives. Write them down with the date. Everything else in this guide is about choosing which of those two rates applies to a given order, so it helps to know how far apart they are for your account.

Order type sets the default

A market order always takes liquidity and pays the taker rate. A limit order priced so that it fills immediately against existing orders also pays taker. A limit order that rests on the book until someone else trades against it normally pays maker. In the app, choosing Limit and setting a price a little away from the current best price is the simplest way to rest on the book.

Post-only and time in force

Under the limit order options, look for post-only. With it switched on, the order is cancelled instead of filling immediately if it would take liquidity, so you never pay taker by accident. The time-in-force setting decides how long an order stays active; options like immediate or cancel fill what they can at once and cancel the rest, which means taker treatment. For maker fills, the standard good-till-cancelled setting with post-only is the usual choice.

Check the fill in history

After a fill, open the order details in the app's order history and look at the fee charged and, where shown, whether it was a maker or taker trade. Compare with your noted rates. If something does not match, keep the order ID and contact support in the app. Remember that saving on fees should not come at the cost of missing an exit you need; when speed matters, taker fees are a fair price.

Risk boundary: OKX App Safety Guide

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
